Try JibJab Sendables® eCards today!
I couldn't resist.
Too bad this isn't sponsorable... it would probably get some major awareness if Adidas or Puma sponsored the clothes...
another look-alike...
FYI: Catherine Keener was in The Forty-Year-Old Virgin, Lauren Ruff is one of those pre-Madonna jet-setting types never seems to stay in the same place for too long... oh, and she's a cunty salad.

Karma Police end Turf War
As you may already know, ESPN/Monday Night Football AstroTurf boards were placed on bus shelters and billboards here in NYC. I instantly fell in love with the campaign. But shortly after they were posted... they began to disappear. I will admit I told a fellow Wizard to steal the turf for his apartment... but it was gone before any attempt was made. It would be a great piece of creative advertising history.
Today ESPN's W+K team fought back with new paper posters seen below:

Font "Georgia" is nice.
Hello fellow Gators,
Well my life is running away and I'm pretty much living the dream. Of course I can't help but always wonder what is next... I'm torn between Australia and The Peace Corp. That could change next week though.
Tip for the new comers:
Don't work in New Business- become a bad ass in your respective area and then be recruited to "pitch" new business. Otherwise you're just a grunt with a blackberry. But the worst is over and my new assignment is still a mystery.
While I was catching up on my WOW reading I saw this question:
When you're selling a freezer, what are you really selling? what ideas/emotions?
A couple of things:
A place to store dead bodies
A place to keep food fresh... longer.
A place to store memories... like the slice of cake you've had since your wedding day 45 years ago. That half of a hot-dog left over when you broke the world record. It preserves the things worth saving.
That was fun.
At any rate, I see a lot of Ogilvy quoting... and Julio he did write a great book. I'm still wondering how many years it will take to stick.

Lazy Sundaze
Sat on the couch all day. Karina inspired me to post a few videos I came across today.
Diesel ad(?)
Kim Jong Il propoganda video
Secret Service tackling a guy after accosting Reagan
Funny music video
Funny explanation of the aforementioned video
I hear you can get this fixed w/ a minor procedure now
And I have now spent almost all 12 hours I've been awake on the couch.

Jesus is my Friend
Hey everyone,
Just a quick post to let you know that while I haven't posted in God knows how long, I am still reading and thinking of you all. Fall semester is busier than I ever could've imagined...and I feel very disconnected with the world outside of UF.
For those of you in NYC, I'm coming up on November 12th. The flight is officially booked.
JFran and Julio, the rest of the e-board and I will be in SoFla October 3-5 for a Counting Crows/ Maroon 5 concert.
Still working on my trips to LA and Japan =)
Love you all. Here's a link that cheered me up today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-NOZU2iPA8

Another Eric Roller video
It's his stand-up comedy routine from this quarter that just ended:

Top Dog
At first I was going to go on a whole diatribe about how disappointed I have become about the current state of advertising ever since I started reading Ogilvy on Advertising. This mainly has to do with my opinion(which I've developed after listening to and meeting with "professionals", hanging out with other students at MAS, and just plain watching and reading a lot of new ads) that most modern creatives are either pompous wannabe-artists or drunken frat boys, and almost no one is worried about actually selling the clients' products. But I'll save that for a time when I'm not about to fall asleep. Instead I'm just linking you to an ad that our esteemed friend Eric Roller created, along with two other MAS students, and that won the Top Dog award for the best overall ad in the MAS summer quarter that just ended. It's for the Must Drink More Milk campaign that DDB Canada is doing for BC Dairy. Eric and his partners received $500 scholarships for being the TOP DOGS.

Advertising Advertising
Some of the more notable names that took out ads in the guide for Advertising Week V. Some of them are good, some aren't. There were a couple others that I could have maybe scanned, but they weren't really that good or for anyone anyone's ever heard of. One of them (that I didn't scan) introduced me to this fun little site called Yearbook Yourself (which Karina has now informed me is old news and I'm way behind...oh well).
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

So everyone has their own views on CP+B's new Microsoft work. I think, however, that Penny Arcade says it best.

Bill and Jerry's Sequel!
In a talk with our planner today, the new Microsoft spots were brought up. He introduced me to the new spot, which I share below, in its long, un-TV-friendly form:
Don't know if it will help sell Vista, as the product has major issues, but it is getting people to talk about Microsoft in a different light, and may well help change their image if nothing else, which could be the first step in a very long turnaround. Time shall tell.

Surfing it old school
…by old school, I mean dial-up. Yes, the only internet which I could procure out here in the countryside of Japan was good ol’ dial-up. I won’t knock it (too much), however. After all, going from completely plugged to barley understanding local news is a very big shock.
I have lived in Japan for a whole month now. In actuality, this isn’t that big as my last stay in Japan was three months long. However, those three months and my one month are so different that it seems ludicrous to even try and compare the two.
Before, I lived in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. My host family took amazing care of me, my friends were all at school, and all I was doing was what I do best, studying (some people are good at sports, I’m good at being a student). This is a complete three-sixty from my life now: countryside, absolutely no one I know, and I’m on the other side of the desk.
So what is it like to be a teacher? In a word – ulcer-inducing. I have such a hearty new found respect for all of my past teachers (except my sixth grade math teacher. I still detest you). Between planning a lesson that you hope won’t bore the students to tears, keeping control of a class, and keeping your cool when you have some real…err…sweethearts in your class, you can find yourself completely whipped out.
As an assistant I plan a weekly lesson which I then implement in twelve different classrooms under the direction of seven different teachers. The English teachers range from awesome, to bitchy, to barley able to speak English. In turn, each of those twelve classes varies in skill level (barley able to make a sentence to about medium). After only two visits to each class, I know which ones I can enjoy and which ones I will be breaking my legs to get out of.
My first lesson was…bad. I should be getting some sort of aid from the U.N. or have it declared a federal disaster. Perhaps even its own day in remembrance, or, at the very least, a museum dedicated to enlightening others about the horror that befell mankind on that day.
Why was it so bad?
Well, I didn’t think about my audience (a cardinal sin for any advertiser!)
In the Japanese classroom there is none of those willy-nilly ‘discussions’, ‘debates’, or ‘interactive lessons’ that American classes use.
And that is the way the Japanese like it.
Teachers pride themselves on having students sit quietly and be attentive of the lecture. My students never raise their hands and never speak out (generally speaking). Not taking this into account, my first lesson was very quiet, very one-sided, and very, very, very awful.
I have learned since then and this week was actually rather fun. Ever since my emo-tastic first weekend I have been having a blast. Missing my last train and being forced to stay out some more (oh the horror), joining Naginata (long-sword/spear training), seeing the mountains of Japan - I have made some fun memories.
Naginata is my favorite part of Japan (but food is very close). The students were a bit reluctant to speak to me in club at first. I don’t blame them – I would be freaked out if my English teacher was wailing on me with a wooden sword. Now they freely talk to me in my rambling Japanese and teach me everything they can about Naginata.
Our captain is amazing. Ranked number two throughout all of Japan, and yet she is so ready to help me. In the ring, she scares the crap out of me. Outside she is always bright and cheerful.
The first month has been a very crazy roller coaster. I feel as if I am starting to settle down a little bit. You can feel the bite of fall in the air, which will bring about it the lovely autumn leaves and the deal of all the irritating mosquitoes.
...
Urgh, I just REALLY don't want to make any worksheets right now...

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...
I completely ripped this off from Where's My Jetpack?, a blog that I really enjoy and you probably would, too...
But anyway, it's an awesome quote from the man and legend, David Ogilvy:
"As a private person, I have a passion for landscape, and I have never seen one improved by a billboard. Where every prospect pleases, man is at his vilest when he erects a billboard. When I retire from Madison Avenue, I am going to start a secret society of masked vigilantes who will travel around the world on silent motor bicycles, chopping down posters at the dark of the moon. How many juries will convict us when we are caught in these acts of beneficent citizenship?"
- David M Ogilvy
How sweet would that've been?

They said Heisman Trophy! Drink!
Yay! College football is here!
Looks like we might be able to run the ball this year, which would be good, being that Tim Tebow did not look impressive at all.
Defense looks better. They're getting there.
But anyway, a few of us went to Gin Mill to watch the game. And being the advertising junkies we are, we were pissed that they played random 80s music during the ads. There were a few that we specifically wanted to be able to hear. So, as promised, I give you these commercials, 80s music free (though the song in the Dr. Pepper commercial is somewhat dated).
